LAKE SECESSION WATER LEVEL

The spill gates at the dam on Lake Secession have not been repainted in over 20 years. As with any metal structure exposed to air and moisture, keeping a protective coating on the metal is important to extending its usable life. With this in mind, Abbeville Public Utilities is planning on repainting the spill gates starting November 21st. In order to perform this maintenance, the water level of Lake Secession needs to be lowered below the spill gate depth. That depth is 25 feet below full pool. The lake is already approximately 12 feet below full pool due to the lack of rain the past few months. Drawing down the water will take approximately 14 days and will be accomplished through our normal operation of the hydro-electric facility. In an effort to ensure wildlife are not endangered in this process, we consulted both SCDNR and the US Fish and Wildlife Service on the project. After reviewing the details, both agencies along with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave approval of the plan. Once the drawdown is complete on November 20th, work will begin on the gates on November 21st. It will take approximately 10 weeks to complete the work. Upon completion of the project, we will begin filling the lake to its normal levels. The amount of time required to reach normal levels will depend upon the flow of the Rocky River and local rain events.
